'How to Hold the Ukulele'

Most of the time when you play your ukulele you will be seated on the floor.

  • Always sit cross legged.

  • Remember - there are three steps to getting a GREAT playing position...

  1. 'Back on your Belly!' - Get the back of the ukulele flat against your stomach...

  2. 'On your pocket!' - The ukulele should sit on your pocket area, not in your lap...

  3. 'Hold it up!' - Make sure the end of the ukulele where the tuners are is held at a diagonal angle, nice and tall...

  4. 'Wave!' - Move your left hand up the nexk to the white piece of plastic at the top of the finger board called the 'Nut.' Your thumb should be on one side, all your fingers on the other. Try and use your fingers to wave, moving them away from the strings at first.

Pre Standing up... Standing up left hand... Hang it...
  • (First, roll up the sleeve on your right arm!)
  • Then hold your ukulele in ONE hand, rest it on your knee.
  • Use your spare hand to help you get up. DON'T LET YOUR UKULELE TOUCH THE FLOOR!
  • Hold it up in your LEFT hand...
  • Hang it in front of your body...

Arm out... Standing playing position...
  • Hold your hand out to your side...
  • Make a fist with your right hand...(don't punch anyone in the nose!)
  • Put your ukulele HIGH on your chest...
  • Fold your arm across the ukulele...
  • Don't hold it on your big fat belly!
  • Don't stick it in your sweaty smelly arm pit!
